When children are on the tracks of traditional achievement their whole lives and then graduate college, I think Kierkegaard explains why so many of the best and brightest end up in SWE, consulting, and finance: "anxiety is the dizziness of freedom." To combat this anxiety, these kids take the lowest-risk path toward wealth and status rather than doing something interesting.

Another awesome post. You write analytically--and its unique because its not obnoxious. I don't get lost in graphs or data and I want to keep reading. It's great. You should read "The Anxious Generation" by John Haidt or check out his and his colleague's Substack "After Babel." They touch on social media and American culture more so than you do here, but I think their thoughts would coalesce well with your thoughts on hyper-optimization. Have a great one.
